How Long Does It Take to Grow Mushrooms? Grow Planner

Pick a species and grow method, then enter the day you inoculate. The planner gives you a dated window for each stage. Every window comes from one published source per method, together with the temperature and humidity that source used.

Each method follows one published source.

How it works

Dated Windows From One Timed Source per Method

Each method on the list comes from one source that timed it, and the planner keeps that source's stages together. It adds each stage's shortest and longest length to your start date. So a 17 to 20 day stage that starts on day 0 ends between day 17 and day 20.

Golden oyster bags follow a 2024 trial of alternative substrates for golden oyster, and oyster on straw follows the UF/IFAS home oyster method. The grain-to-bulk plan uses Utah State's beginner guide, which times grain spawn and bulk substrate as separate stages. The indoor plan takes its incubation window and room temperature from Cornell's indoor production guidance.

The ranges are wide because growth depends on temperature, humidity, strain and how well you prepared the substrate. The conditions column shows what each source used, so the dates fit best in a room close to those conditions. If your room runs warmer or cooler, read the dates as a rough guide and watch the bag itself.

Some sources describe a stage without timing it. The planner still lists those stages but leaves them undated, so it never invents a length. If your bag stalls well past its window, slow colonization usually comes down to the species clock, heat or spawn.

Your dates, worked through

stage end = start date + the sum of the stage day ranges so far

  1. Start Oct 30, day 0
  2. Colonization: 17-20 days, so it ends between day 17 and day 20 (Nov 16 to Nov 19)
  3. Pin induction: the source gives conditions but no duration, so the planner stops dating here

Limits

What this tool cannot do

  • It cannot see your room, so the dates assume the conditions in the source.
  • It covers only the methods listed, because each one needs a source that timed it.
  • The ranges carry no promise, and your bag can finish early, late or not at all.

Questions

How long do golden oyster bags take to colonize?

In a 2024 trial, the mycelium fully colonized bags kept in darkness at 24 C and 85% relative humidity within 17 to 20 days of inoculation. The same trial then moved the bags into cooler, wetter air to start pins. Your bags may run faster or slower in a room that differs from those conditions.

How long does oyster mushroom straw take?

The UF/IFAS method gives roughly two to three weeks of colonization at 24 to 25 C and 80 to 90% humidity. After that, the straw moves to fruiting conditions around 20 C with light, about 90% humidity and good air exchange. At home, you can set up a small chamber that keeps that humidity and air exchange steady.

Why does the planner not date the harvest?

The sources it uses give no fixed time from fruiting conditions to harvest, and adding a date there would be a guess. The planner stops dating at the last stage a source timed. From there, you judge the harvest by the mushrooms themselves.
