When Is Morel Season in Your State? Timing by Region

Pick your state to see its typical window for morels and, where its guide names one, the main run. The result adds the weather that moves the start and shows how the states around yours compare. Every date describes a typical spring, so your own year can open early or late.

This tool narrows what to read. It cannot tell you a mushroom is safe to eat. If someone ate a wild mushroom, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

How it works

Where the windows come from

Each window comes from that state's morel season guide on this site, which lists the sources behind it. The bar shows the window the guide gives, split into early, mid and late parts of each month from March to June. Nearby states sit beside it, so you can see whether your neighbours usually open before you or after.

Each state window covers the whole state, so your own patch fruits inside it and never across all of it. Southern ground usually opens the window, and northern or higher ground closes it. In Pennsylvania, the northern tier runs seven to fourteen days behind the south.

The start shifts with soil warmth more than the calendar. The Iowa DNR uses 53 degree soil as the point to start looking, as our Iowa season guide reports, and the Michigan guide sets the start from soil near 50 degrees at four inches. Ohio State, cited in the Ohio season guide, places the first Ohio morels in late March or early April.

The main run appears only where a state guide names one. Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and Virginia each name one, such as Missouri's push from around mid April. States without one show the window alone, and the method panel quotes each guide's own wording.

How the Missouri bar is drawn

  1. Missouri window from our state guide: late March to early May
  2. Bar cells run from late March to early May, each about ten days
  3. Main run, as the guide words it: from around mid April

Limits

What this tool cannot do

  • Dates describe a typical year and make no forecast for this one.
  • It cannot tell a true morel from a false one. Only a lengthwise cut through the whole mushroom starts that check, and the false morel profile shows what the cut reveals.
  • It covers 14 states, the ones with their own guide on this site.
  • No window tells you a mushroom is safe to eat, and it replaces no full identification.

Questions

Why did my state start late this year?

The window follows soil warmth and moisture, and the calendar only stands in for them. Cold or dry springs push the start later, and the state guides name temperature cues such as 53 degree soil in Iowa. Checking the soil near your own patch tells you more about this year than the date on the bar.

Why does the window cover two months when my spot lasts two weeks?

The window spans the whole state from its warmest ground to its coolest. The Illinois guide notes that any single piece of ground gives only five days to two weeks. Following the ground north or uphill keeps you finding morels for longer, as the Kentucky and Pennsylvania guides describe.

Which states have their own guide?

Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. Each one has its own season guide on this site, and the tool draws that state's window from it. The list grows only when we publish a new state guide.
