How it works
Where the months come from
Each species profile records its season in words, and only some of them name an exact month range, such as "August through November in Britain and Ireland". The finder reads those ranges with the same rule the profile pages use to draw their month strip. Seasons written as "late summer" or "autumn" stay out, because guessing their months would put species into the wrong weeks.
The region comes from the same sentence where the profile names one, and North American species can also take it from the profile's region field. Most profiles that give exact months name Britain and Ireland, so that region holds the most species and other regions can look thin. Choosing All regions drops the region filter and shows every species with recorded months.
Poisonous species stay in the list and sit at the bottom in red, because they fruit in the same weeks and often in the same woods as the edible ones. The Death Cap in October is the reason an October list needs more than a species name. Questions
Why is my region not listed?
The finder only offers regions that the recorded month ranges actually name. Most of the exact ranges in our profiles come from Britain and Ireland, so other areas would show almost nothing. As more profiles add exact months for other places, new regions can join the menu.
Why do edible and poisonous species share a month?
Fruiting follows weather and host trees, and edibility plays no part in it. In October in Britain and Ireland, the Hedgehog Mushroom and the Death Cap both fruit in the same weeks. Finding an edible in season tells you nothing about the mushroom growing a step away.
Does a warm autumn change the months?
It can. The recorded ranges describe a typical year, and the Death Cap profile notes that rain and host climate govern its regional timing. So a warm or dry autumn can move the first and last weeks away from the months the list shows.
